ESIC Nears Completion of MDL Match-Fixing Probe
27.06.2024
The Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) has declared that its comprehensive probe into alleged match-fixing in the Mountain Dew League (MDL) esports competition is nearing its end, asserting that it has conducted 15 inquiries.
MDL is a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) tournament jointly established by esports organization ESL and beverage company Mountain Dew, offering amateur gamers an opportunity to excel on the competitive platform.
However, over the past 18 months, ESIC indicated that its global integrity monitoring system received dubious betting signals, triggering its investigation into the issue.
In providing an update, ESIC stated that it has carried out a “meticulous investigation” into accusations against numerous entities and has cooperated with relevant anti-corruption advocates to collect evidence and analyze the allegations.
The ESIC asserts they are employing diverse investigative tools and methodologies to link bettors who placed questionable and atypical wagers to players and teams potentially implicated in the MDL.
The ESIC indicates they will unveil an official statement regarding their findings within the upcoming four weeks, as roughly fifteen investigations are nearing conclusion.
The ESIC declared, “Investigations into match manipulation are intricate and necessitate substantial collaboration from various international entities, encompassing wagering operators, governmental agencies, law enforcement, and industry stakeholders.”
“Moreover, as such discoveries frequently coincide with the potential for criminal responsibility, the ESIC has implemented supplementary measures to ensure meticulous skill and attention are dedicated to all facets of the investigative process.”
This update follows the banning of three Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) team coaches this week for engaging in deceitful practices. They were determined to be exploiting a flaw in the game to gain an advantage in matches.
ESL and DreamHack, another esports tournament organizer, announced the bans subsequent to the ESIC investigation.
