Australia Launches BetStop: A Self-Exclusion Program for Online Gambling
14.06.2024
Down Under is rolling out a new program this August dubbed “BetStop” to assist individuals in managing their wagering habits. Beginning on August 21, 2023, any resident of Australia seeking to curb their betting can enroll in BetStop. This initiative will allow them to establish boundaries on their gambling expenditures or even entirely restrict themselves from all internet-based wagering platforms governed by Australian regulations. This self-imposed exclusion can be implemented for a minimum duration of three months, or even indefinitely.
The concept has been circulating for some time, initially suggested back in 2018, but it’s finally coming to fruition. The Australian Communications and Media Authority will be tasked with ensuring BetStop functions effectively and safeguards individuals’ personal data.
Once an individual enrolls in BetStop, wagering providers are legally obligated to deactivate their accounts and are prohibited from allowing them to establish new ones, place wagers, or even send them enticing offers. To further bolster the system, Australia is also mandating that online betting operators confirm their patrons’ identities before they can place their initial wager.
Expect to encounter more information about BetStop in the near future, as the government is ensuring that all betting firms extensively promote it across their websites, applications, and advertising materials.
Down Under, opting out of wagering activities isn’t a choice made lightly. Committing means a minimum three-month exclusion period. Furthermore, demonstrating consultation with a knowledgeable expert is a must.
This follows another significant action: Australia recently prohibited using credit for internet betting. They’re truly taking a hard line!
