Better Collective Acquires Playmaker Capital in Major North American Expansion
13.06.2024
The prominent Danish gaming entity, Better Collective, is making a substantial move into the North American market with the purchase of Playmaker Capital, a Toronto-based digital sports media firm. This calculated maneuver considerably broadens Better Collective’s scope, incorporating Playmaker’s notable collection of brands, including Yardbarker and The Nation Network, into their existing lineup, which already encompasses the recently obtained Playmaker HQ. This acquisition grants Better Collective access to a vast viewership of over 200 million sports enthusiasts throughout the Americas.
This acquisition follows a robust financial period for Better Collective, with income escalating by 39% to €78.1 million. The company’s profits also experienced a substantial increase, demonstrating their effective expansion approach.
Jesper Søgaard, CEO and co-founder of Better Collective, lauded the acquisition as a “pivotal” juncture in the company’s trajectory, solidifying their standing as a dominant force in the global digital sports media arena. This action, combined with their recent designation of Pernille Holbøll as their new AI lead, indicates a promising new phase for Better Collective as they utilize technology and strategic acquisitions to advance their ambitious objectives.
The transaction is anticipated to be finalized by the conclusion of the initial quarter of 2024, contingent upon customary regulatory and stakeholder endorsements. Better Collective has engaged Moelis & Company to serve as its financial counsel and has retained prominent legal practices Stikeman Elliott, Bech-Bruun Law Firm, and Greenberg Traurig for legal guidance. PwC is overseeing the accounting and taxation aspects of the agreement.
