Australian Watchdog Cracks Down on Unlicensed Online Gambling Platforms
12.06.2024
The Australian media watchdog, known as the ACMA, has been actively pursuing online gambling platforms found in breach of regulations. A handful of businesses were recently issued formal notices for violating established rules, although these actions were just recently revealed to the public.
One such business, Mad Entertainment, manages the Golden Lion casino platform. They were discovered providing services to Australian residents without the necessary permits, a significant offense under the 2001 Interactive Gambling Act. It seems they even had direct connections on their website specifically aimed at attracting players from Australia!
Golden Lion wasn’t alone. Thunderpick, an esports wagering platform managed by Paloma Media, received a reprimand for comparable infractions. They, too, were operating within Australia without the required licensing.
Betibet, overseen by Dama and Friolion Limited, also encountered difficulties. It appears they were reachable to individuals utilizing Australian internet services, again lacking the appropriate authorization.
However, there’s more! Dama and Friolion Limited were also responsible for Greenspin, Slotman, and Jeetcity – all functioning unlawfully within Australia. The ACMA treats these matters with utmost seriousness, reminding all parties that even a single customer located in Australia means the website is deemed to have connections with Australian clientele and must possess the proper licensing.
Online platforms are classified as providing wagering services when individuals can pay to engage in games of luck or ability with the aim of winning prizes. This sector is subject to regulation in Australia to safeguard users. The ACMA, an Australian government agency, curates a roster of authorized gaming providers on its platform. These permitted operators have undergone assessment by official regulatory entities such as the NSW Liquor & Gaming Authority and others contingent upon their geographical situation within Australia.
It’s noteworthy that even prominent operators occasionally breach the regulations. In recent times, corporations like Ladbrokes and bet365 were discovered to be permitting wagers they were not authorized to, underscoring the necessity for continuous examination of this sector.
