Allwyn in Talks to Acquire UK National Lottery Operator Camelot
11.06.2024
The prominent Austrian gaming entity, Allwyn, is engaged in serious negotiations to procure its competitor, Camelot UK. Camelot’s controlling entity, the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, is contemplating the divestiture of the lottery administrator’s UK branch to Allwyn.
This situation arises following an intense bidding contest earlier this year, in which Allwyn secured the sought-after fourth UK National Lottery permit from Camelot. Legal actions by the departing operator initially hindered the handover, but Camelot withdrew its challenge in September.
Just as observers assumed the matter was resolved, Allwyn and OTTP surprised many by disclosing preliminary discussions. Speculation suggests they are targeting a £100 million ($115.4 million) agreement, which would place Allwyn at the helm of the UK National Lottery earlier than expected. Their original takeover date was February 2024.
Although Allwyn verified the acquisition discussions, they are withholding the financial specifics. They have indicated their objective is to guarantee a seamless transition advantageous to all parties, particularly the charitable organizations funded by the National Lottery, and naturally, the staff of both Camelot and Allwyn UK.
The media outlet, Sky News, reported that Camelot might withdraw its legal action if the purchase proceeds. Although the gaming company previously abandoned its objection to Allwyn securing the permit in September, it maintains a separate complaint against the regulatory body, the Gambling Commission.
